How Decluttering Your Space Can Uplift Your Body And Mind

We all have stuff. The question is how much stuff do we have and how much stuff do we actually need? Some of us are sentimental and are attached to our things, making the task of decluttering seem like a difficult and impossible one. But once we realize the transformative effects that decluttering has on our space, mind, and physical health, then decluttering will become something that we WANT to do williningy.

Follow the Home Edit for some Inspiration

If you need an extra push, I highly recommend watching the Netflix series, “The Home Edit”, founded by Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin. Shearer and Teplin are best friends who founded their business partnership in 2015. Their business first came about from something that they are passionate about, while also expressing how happy they feel to make a difference in someone else’s life. The home organizers have clients ranging from celebrities to normal everyday people; they have turned their clients’ space into a beautiful and organized environment. Their most inspiring quote is, “You can either keep it or gain more space. What is more important to you?” They truly teach you the value of having more space in your home. They have released a Netflix series, launched a book, and have a line of organizational products sold in 25 different countries.

Reduces Anxiety

A study published in 2009, in the “Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin”, discovered that clutter can lead homeowners to feel overwhelmed, anxious and depressed, especially if visitors comment on their mess. When your space is messy and chaotic, it causes your mind to be scattered and anxious. When you are stressed, it not only affects your mental health, your physical health is affected too. Stress can lead to severe tension headaches, digestive problems, insomnia, a weak immune system, and much more.Getting rid of unnecessary mess can instantly calm your nervous system, which is essential for your mental and physical health.

Improves Sleep

Studies also indicate that clutter in your home can prevent your body’s cortisol levels from naturally declining throughout the day, disrupting our sleep cycle. Your brain interprets visual stimuli as tasks that need to be completed, so when you see clutter – whether consciously or unconsciously – it causes cortisol levels to rise. Removing the clutter changes the brain’s response and helps you sleep peacefully at night.

Boosts Your Mood, Confidence, and Productivity

Decluttering also allows you to be more productive and creative throughout the day. When everything is in its right place, you feel lighter; giving you room to get tasks done and be more creative. Your decluttered space will also make you feel more confident about your home and you will feel more comfortable inviting friends and family over. Your ability to make decisions will also improve by constantly deciding whether to keep or get rid of something. You will also feel more energized like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders, which will allow you to tackle more tasks at home or at work. You will feel happier too. What can be better than that?
