Jeanne Villepreux-Power: The Aquarium
French naturalist and self-taught marine biologist, Villepreux-Power was trying to prove that the rare type of octopus called the paper nautilus does not take discarded shells from other organisms, but actually grows its own shell.
So, one day in 1832, in order to observe the creature and other aquatic life-forms, she created a big glass enclosure that today we happen to call the aquarium. Indeed. This invention was born out Power’s innovative mind and eagerness to research marine life.
